He lived a very interesting life. He was blessed and cursed in equally huge ways. He made and lost millions three time. He ended up killing himself. Definitely get the Reminiscences of a Stock Operator and his biography. He makes a lot of really valid points about human nature.
How did he lose all of the money? I'm guessing it was from playing the stock market?
Of course. He made millions and lost it 3 times. He would always keep letting the money ride and eventually he would go bust. Each time, he made sure to pay off his creditors in full when he got his money back. I thought that was a very interesting personality quirk.

Jessie Livermore had a couple sons. Jessie Jr, in particular he spoiled. Jessie Jr and his mother, Jessie's Ex-Wife took to drinking rather heavily. One time during a particulary drunken argument, she pulled out a gun and shot him. Yep! Shot her own son. Livermore made $100 million in 1929 shorting the market during the big bad bear. A few years later he was bankrupt again. In the 1970's Jessie Jr, still a heavy alcoholic attempted to kill a cop. He was awaiting trial on a likely life sentence when he decided to take his own life. The huge market success of Jessie Livermore didn't translate to his personal life.
